As a progressive, Quaker school, we believe that social and emotional growth is not separate from academic success—it’s essential to it.

Wellness & SEL

Our approach to social-emotional learning (SEL) is woven throughout the school day and grounded in strong relationships, a sense of belonging, and shared community values–ingredients that create learning environments where children learn best.  Our Approach to SEL

Our commitment to student well-being includes a full-time school counselor who provides both push-in and pull-out lessons, one-on-one counseling, and small friendship groups, as well as an Assistant Head of School for Community and Belonging who supports students through restorative conflict resolution. Together, they co-teach weekly social-emotional learning classes for grades 3-5 and 6-8, ensuring every student has the tools, relationships, and support needed to navigate challenges, build strong connections, and thrive both in and out of the classroom. Our model for SEL offers practical strategies such as a daily Morning Meeting and Advisory model, which integrate social and academic learning, reflecting our belief in the whole child and connecting to our Quaker values. Many of our daily practices and ways of being are based on Responsive Classroom, a widely respected, research-backed approach to teaching that helps create safe, respectful, and engaging classrooms where all students can thrive.

I’m really grateful for PFS. It wasn’t just a school to me—it was a community that shaped the way I see the world and my place in it. I learned to love learning, to connect deeply with others, and to stand up for what’s right.
